How we help healthcare professionals and the general public during the Covid-19 pandemic

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 health crisis, our teams at Synapse Medicine have been hard at work developing technological solutions for both medical professionals and the general public. We have featured our different initiatives related to the novel coronavirus on covid19.synapse-medicine.com.

A platform to support safe use of medications by the public

Thanks to its expertise and technological know-how, Synapse Medicine was able to launch its first initiative for the general public very rapidly. The website covid19-medicaments.com (in French) allows anyone with a suspected Covid-19 infection to check whether a particular drug carries a risk of worsening their symptoms. To realize this project, we collaborated with several institutional partners including the French Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (SFPT), Bordeaux University Hospitals’ Department of Pharmacology, and the French Network of Regional Pharmacovigilance Centres (RFCRPV). We are proud to have led this joint effort and to see our platform not only referenced on the website of the French Ministry of Health but also being recommended by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM). Our records show that the site has already been used over 750,000 times to date, confirming its public value. Coverage is the name of a clinical trial launched on 14 April 2020 by Bordeaux University Hospitals, with technological support from Synapse Medicine. The goal of this trial is to provide home care to more than 1,000 elderly patients over the age of 65 who have tested positive for Covid-19, in an effort to relieve the pressure on hospitals and compare four different treatments (hydroxychloroquine, favipiravir, imatinib and telmisartan) with a control arm of patients receiving a zinc-based dietary supplement. It requires mobile doctor-and-nurse teams to visit patients in their homes to administer the drugs.

Synapse Medicine developed a dedicated platform for the Coverage trial to support these mobile teams with the administration of treatments. Doctors can use the platform to check the compatibility of the drugs given for Covid-19 with patients’ concomitant therapies in real-time. It is a key time-saving tool that allows the medical teams to successfully implement the clinical trial protocol and ensure the safety of their patients when selecting a treatment.

Our teams at Synapse Medicine remain fully mobilized throughout this crisis, and we will continue to develop tools to support the appropriate use of medications. We remain at the disposal of French healthcare organizations and international institutions alike.
